Sunday Sampler - January 16, 2011 First Methodist Church Plymouth 2:00 pm |
|
Our “Sunday Sampler” is, as the title suggests, a tasty musical Smörgåsbord of a variety of smaller works performed by our boutique-size orchestra of 7 players. Music Director Nan Washburn will also be doing triple duty that afternoon as conductor, occasional flutist and arranger of several of these works for the ensemble. Back by popular demand will be PSO’s own harpist Maurice Draughn who will again dazzle us this year with a performance of the colorful yet haunting Danses sacrée et profane (Dances Sacred and Profane) by Claude Debussy. The program includes music from Baroque ballet “Les Genies” (1736) by little known composer Mlle. Duval, George Gershwin’s charming early work, Lullaby, works by contemporary composers Chen Yi and Robert Ward, new arrangements of Mahler and Dvorak concluding with a delightful traditional Venezuelan dance called “Pulgarcito.”
